Forgot about this blog. Reading through the posts, I realize that this does capture a bit of the day to day that tends to get lost over time. As a result, I am going to try and get back on the blog train even if it is just me reading the posts. Here is a picture from last year's first day school - so nearly a year and half ago. But it is one I really like. I'll catch you guys up (well catch future me up anway) soon.

Fish Lake Beach
With my parents out of town, I took a few days off to be with Shai. Yesterday, Heather and I took both of our youngest kids to Fish Lake Beach near her house. In High School and college we used to talk about one day having babies and pushing their strollers around a lake. With all of the ups and downs of life, in the end,we ended up having kids of the same ages and we live fairly close by one another. We never got to pushing our strollers around the lake, but yesterday felt pretty close to that.

Turkey Meatballs

As a kid, I remember having asked my mom what time of her life was the most fun for her. With out pause, her answer was those few years after she and my dad were married but before they had kids. As a daughter, it is slightly uncomfortable to hear that the best time of your parents' life was just before you existed.
Home with Shai today, and putting him down for his nap got me thinking of what my answer would be if one of my kids ever asked me that same question.
I started thinking about those few years after marriage and before kids and how truly fun that time really was. We were grown ups, with all of the privileges that grown ups enjoy, and yet we really didn't answer to anyone but one another. We choose how we spent our money, where we went on a Saturday afternoon, how long we slept in on Sunday, what we ate, how clean or messy our apartment was and everything in between.
Now I truly love my life and having a family was always what I had wanted. However, I was thinking about how parenting sort of takes away a whole lot of control and even fun. It's a different kind of fun, to be sure. But days are driven by nap schedules, doctors' appointments, trips to the park and meals.
When the girls got home from camp today, I faced my daily dilemma of what to feed my family tonight. I don't cook everything from scratch like my mother did, but I try to limit the chicken nuggets, pizza, hot dog dinners to just a few a week. But I still feel like I am making the same thing all the time.
I found ground turkey in the fridge and couldn't bare the thought of turkey sloppy joes again. I have never liked meat in shapes - loaves, balls, but I was simply out of ideas.
I put together some sort of mix including minced fresh onion, cumin, salt, pepper, oregano then added ketchup and egg substitute to the turkey. As I rolled each tiny turkey ball, I felt this weird mix of defeat and pride. However, I can put a fat check mark next today as a homemade dinner night for my kids.

Mountain Momma

In August we road tripped to West Virginia to visit Marisa and her family. Marisa and I have been friends since we were 9 years old.
Our youth together was filled with many wacky performances, skits, made up songs, stunts, multi-family babysitting events, bike rides and many a summer night sitting on that hill across from the Dominick's at Lake Cook and Arlington Heights Road eating ice cream cones and watching the sunset.
By sheer coincidence, as adults, we are both moms to a set of fraternal twins.
The drive took us 11 hours and miraculously the kids did great. Once there we all had a blast and Marisa and I lived out our unspoken dream that one day our kids would all be friends.

Table and Chairs

Our dining room table and chairs set was an ovular hand-me-down from my mom's nursing home 10 years ago. Since then, 2 of the 4 chairs have split and the table permanently wobbles.
When we moved to our new house, we bought a smaller square table from IKEA in the hopes of creating an "eat in kitchen." Besides not having adequate space in the kitchen, ( more like an "eat in family room") the other problem is that we don't have chairs for the new table and haven't invested the time or money to get some more.
Depending on where we want to eat, (or which table is cleared), we end up moving the four mismatched chairs back and forth between the dining room and the kitchen. It is our tedious, ridiculous, and daily dance.

Untitled Part 3
Darin after reading the last post: You didn't mention my experience in the fat lady bathing suit section at Target.
(Yes, I sent Darin to Target in search of a suitable suit)
When sales lady said 'can I help you find something?' I had to ask if there was more selection or anything in the back...To which she replied, 'We've only got the gold and leopard-print in that size.'
